Jesus Blessing the Children by Gustave Doré

Few aspects of our Lord's character are as typical and distinctive as the one portrayed in this passage. In pagan societies, children held no rights and parents wielded absolute and unchecked authority. In those ancient times, it was even considered commendable to abandon or let perish offspring who were deemed weak or deformed, as they were seen as unlikely to contribute to the state. However, such callous practices were absent in the Mosaic tradition, where the sanctity of human life was highly valued, and newborns were marked with the token of God's everlasting covenant within the first week of their existence.

Nonetheless, when parents brought their infants to seek the blessing of our Lord during His days, the disciples rebuked them. Mistakenly believing that dealing with children was beneath their Master's dignity, they attempted to shield Him from these young ones, assuming that such youthful candidates were unworthy of His blessings. Yet, the Gospel account reveals that our Lord was greatly displeased by their behavior, rejecting their cold, haughty, and unfeeling views. He recognized the inherent value of each child and empathized with the heartfelt yearnings of parents.

Thus, the depicted scene vividly portrays infants coming from all directions, some carried in their parents' arms, others toddling on their own feet, while the disciples stood by with disapproving and solemn expressions. In contrast, the joyful and eager mothers rejoiced as their children received the benediction of the great prophet. It is heartening to know that countless anguished hearts found solace in His encouraging words, "Suffer little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven." Undoubtedly, a significant number of the glorified inhabitants of heaven will be from this cherished group.

The Savior, who blessed these little ones two millennia ago, remains ever ready to extend His blessings today and forevermore, for His nature is unchanging across time.
