The Creation of Light by Gustave Doré, Genesis 1:1-3, Bible.Gallery

In 1866, the renowned artist Gustave Doré contributed 241 illustrations to a new publication of The Bible known as La Grande Bible de Tours. Among these remarkable illustrations was "The Creation of Light," which brought to life scenes from both the Old and New Testament. Doré meticulously crafted his designs, which were then passed on to a team of engravers responsible for the final published books. "The Creation of Light" marked one of the earliest illustrations in this publication, showcasing a simple yet powerful composition of the sun emerging from behind a dark mass of clouds. Despite its apparent simplicity, the artwork held great symbolic significance, representing the divine act of creation described in Genesis 1:3.

Following "The Creation of Light" in the series, Doré presented captivating illustrations of "The Creation of Eve" and "Adam and Eve Driven Out of Eden." All of his depictions captured emotions and drama, reflecting his romantic artistic style that extended across various mediums like illustration, painting, and sculpture. Regarded as one of his greatest achievements, Doré's Bible de Tours drawings required the collaboration of a team of engravers to bring his visions to the final printed publication. The printing process was handled by Mame, Tours, and Cassell and Co., England, once the woodblocks were meticulously engraved and prepared. Doré's reputation as an artist had spread across the UK and France, opening up numerous opportunities for him in both capitals.

"The Creation of Light" portrays the rising sun as a triumphant force that vanquishes darkness and chaos. As God spoke against the rivers and seas, the world was prepared for the dawn of creation on the first day. This pivotal moment, depicted without any figures, radiates a sense of hope and renewal as a new day dawns. While some might have expected a painting with vibrant colors and contrasting shades to depict this theme, Doré skillfully utilized the medium of illustration, employing varied lines to convey the desired mood and emotions. As a result, "The Creation of Light" has become one of Doré's most celebrated drawings, influencing later generations' visual interpretations of the same Biblical scenes within their imaginations.
