Born in Portland, Maine, Colman relocated to New York City alongside his family during his childhood. His father established a bookstore, attracting a clientele immersed in literature that might have impacted Colman's artistic journey. It's believed that he received brief tutelage from Asher Durand, a painter associated with the Hudson River School. Colman's first artwork was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1850.
