Artwork Description

On the right Moses is reading to a listening crowd (Deut, 29-30) and at his feet is the Covenant, with two tablets of the Law. On the left is his successor Joshua. In the center of the background Moses is on Mount Nebo. An angel shows him the promised land, which he will never reach. Then on his left people mourn for his death. This painting is a series of events clustered into one painting. These types of paintings are famous in the Sistine Chapels. Many other artists like Botticelli’s artworks are there in forms of clusters of artworks together to represent a series of events. In this painting the whole composition and placing of the photos create a feeling of unity and a sense of “togetherness”. If you see closely, all of the humans have the same height and they are all touching the same horizontal line that cuts the painting into two equal parts. Also we can see unity in distress by the colors the artist used. The light lilac color strikes the eye first and it is scattered along the painting, and not just in one spot. This is to create the theme of unity in distress. Distress as in the different emotions and scenes going on in the painting.
